Senate bill 102 has been called the last chance measure for the Black Hills Playhouse located in Custer State Park. Opponents of the bill argue that there is too much work needed to maintain the theater. Proponents counter that the Black Hills Playhouse is a historical landmark that shouldn't just be dismissed. Representative Peggy Gibson is a proponent of the bill. She says the theater has performances that you won't find anywhere else.
"I've been to New York City, I've been to Europe, I've attended plays all over the world and the Black Hills Playhouse is next to none. The entertainment, the bang for you buck that you get at the Black Hills Playhouse is phenomenal"
The bill passed with a 65 to 4 vote. The measure has already been approved by the Senate but now returns there so senators can consider changes made by House members.
House Bill 12-41 would add an additional month to when South Dakota residents may purchase fireworks. Vendors would be open December 23 through January 22. Senator Jason Gant says that the state would benefit from this market.
"It keeps SD Competitive in the fireworks market. Many of our neighboring states are looking to expand their market sale time. So in order for South Dakota to be a leader in the firework sales we should go forward and change or add to our dates when fireworks can be sold."
Senator Mike Vehle doesn't agree with the designated start of the new season.
"We said no alcohol on Christmas, but now we can have fireworks?"
House bill 1241 passed with a vote of 19-16
