A bill that prohibits the judicial enforcement of any religious codes was passed by the State House of Representatives.
Proponents say this bill codifies a 2010 State Supreme Court decision dealing with religion and government. Republican State Representative Roger Hunt of Brandon says the bill also deals with a concern over Sharia Law.
"It also gives us the provision needed in essence deal with religious codes that might be sought to be utilized and forced in the state of South Dakota," Hunt said.
Hunt has been a major backer of anti-abortion bills throughout most of his legislative career. Critics say Sharia law is in no way a threat in the United States. No one spoke in opposition to the bill in committee. It passed with a vote of eight to five and goes next to the Senate.
