Vanished South Dakota: Smithwick

Smithwick

Vanished South Dakota producer Stephanie Rissler visited many Fall River County locations during the first week of September, including Smithwick. A post office named Smithwicks was established in 1887, but the named was shortened to Smithwick in 1901. We were able to visit with a few of the former townspeople of who shared stories of businesses, churches, the school and memories of the cattle and railroad. Today several homes are still filled with families who live there and there is still an operating post office. While not the bustling cattle town it was once was, Smithwick is still a charming community set in some of the prettiest landscape in the state.
