The public is invited to a premiere screening of Art Basics with Dick Termes, a new video art instruction series on SDPB.org that launches January 23. The event takes place Tuesday, January 24, at 6:30pm in Meier Recital Hall at Black Hills State University in Spearfish. The program includes a reception with artist Dick Termes and SDPB series producers.

Termes is known worldwide for his “Termespheres” – large, colorful spheres painted in six-point perspective that rotate to produce the illusion of perfect proportion. With Art Basics with Dick Termes, Termes hopes to teach basic drawing skills to budding artists of all ages. “This series is for 9- to 90-year olds, for kids who love to draw and adults who say, ‘I can’t draw a line,’” says Termes. “We actually back it all the way up in this class to explain what creates a line! I want to take that fear away.”

With major funding from Rapid City-based John T. Vucurevich Foundation, the multi-part series was recorded on-site near Spearfish at Termes’ geodesic studio. Surrounded by his signature orbs and armed with a Sharpie and an easel pad, Termes guides students through the creation of cubes, cylinders, and spheres while demonstrating techniques for turning basic shapes into life-like images. The series also combines animation with Termes’ instruction in basic line drawing, contour surface lines, and shading techniques – all in accessible, easy-to-understand terms.

To accompany the new video series, SDPB’s Online and Education Department has developed a teacher’s guide, lesson plans, and activity ideas.
