Read Across South Dakota……and did we ever! This was
the sixth year for the RASD literacy filled extravaganza. South Dakota
Public Broadcasting and the SD State Library have formed a great
partnership that helps to promote summer reading programs. Each year
letters are sent out in March to all South Dakota public and school
libraries inviting them to complete applications for the selection
process. Ten libraries are chosen for the five-day whirlwind tour.
At each library, children ages 4-10 years were treated to a story time,
free books and goody bags filled with activity material. Buddy, SDPB’s
Children’s mascot, also travels across the state on the tour. Kids get a
chance to hug and high-five and get “stickered” by the big blue Buddy.
Also included in the visits is information for parents about SDPB’s
educational Ready To Learn Program, which promotes the educational and
appropriate use of their popular children’s television programs and the
promotion of literacy.
