4. Our Best Friends
CHILDREN
TV – Many South Dakota children spend a part of each day with South
Dakota Public Television. SDPTV is proud to offer a full daytime
schedule of popular, entertaining, educational, non-violent programs.
Older children and teens get a taste of history, geography, geology,
medicine, biology, botany and more with award-winning science and
nature shows.
Online – Just about every schoolage child in South Dakota has access
to a computer and the Internet through the schools. SDPB Online offers
safe, interesting and stimulating information along with links to a
variety of interactive Web sites related to TV favorites such as
ARTHUR or MISTER ROGERS’ NEIGHBORHOOD. Sites related to more advanced
shows, such as NOVA, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE and NATURE enhance the
educational aspects of these programs.
TEACHERS, PARENTS, DAYCARE PROVIDERS
SDPB Education and Outreach works closely with schools throughout the
state to augment the learning potential of Public TV via teacher
guides, viewer guides, student worksheets and other materials (get
link to Learning). Special broadcasts during the school day are geared
for in-classroom use and overnight broadcasts are offered for teachers
and home-schoolers to record and use as needed. In addition, as a PBS
“Ready To Learn” station, Education and Outreach helps daycare and
preschool providers improve their services with everything from
classes and workshops to free books for disadvantaged youngsters.
