Missouri River Memories
Dakota Life - 05/01/2003
The last un-channeled stretch of the Missouri River runs from Yankton to Jefferson. The rest has been dammed, channeled, and controlled by man to provide reservoirs, alleviate flooding and prevent the unpredictability of the waterway. Before man’s intervention, the river had a darker side. The Mighty Mo was an unpredictable, uncontrollable giant. Spring floods often washed away farmland, livestock, homes, livelihoods and lives. This segment uses old photos, new video, etc. to present the river as a respected and feared character in the history of the state. For more information http://infolink.cr.usgs.gov
