Archaeology Can You Dig It!
Science Cafe - 07/14/2009
SDPB hosted its first Science Café event on Tuesday, July 14 at McNally's Irish Pub in Sioux Falls. Adrien Hannus, Ph.D., archaeology and anthropology professor at Augustana College, was the featured scientist for the evening. Dr. Hannus is also the archaeology team’s leader on the new PBS program, Time Team America.

About 50 people participated in our event, which started at 7:00 p.m. They enjoyed their refreshments as we shared a video clip from a NOVA ScienceNOW episode and a preview clip for the Time Team America series. Then, after some jokes and trivia put forth by SDPB Radio’s Cara Hetland, the audience was able to hear Dr. Hannus talk about his career in archaeology and his experiences on the Time Team America production. After a short break, the audience was able to pose questions for Dr. Hannus to answer. SDPB gave away several cool door prizes, and then participants were asked to complete a short evaluation of the event. Several people stayed around to visit with Dr. Hannus after the event was over.
The evaluations indicated that this was a worthwhile and enjoyable event and that people would like to attend future Science Café events.
The Time Team America research team will visit five sites to uncover mysteries in history. Hannus and the team have only three days at each site to come up with answers. The fifth and final episode features South Dakota’s Fort James, a stone fort that once protected settlers in the Mitchell area.
