When Artie Shaw created a new band in 1944, it featured one of the most exciting trumpeters in jazz history, Roy Eldridge.
This week on Big Band Spotlight, we explore the flashy exuberance of Eldridge and how Shaw always tried to suppress it by restraining his trumpet solos. Nevertheless, Eldridge's touch added something special to what was, arguably, one of Artie Shaw's best bands.
