Senate Education

There are 35 Legislative Days scheduled for the 2008 session. Standing Legislative Committees meet in regularly scheduled sessions during the morning hours of each Legislative Day. Some committees will hold special evening meetings. The Senate Education Committee is scheduled to meet Tuesday and Thursday at 7:45am in room 423 of the Capitol.

SB 26 - repeal certain provisions regarding the Advanced Reading Enhancement Program.
SB 27 - repeal certain provisions regarding the Office of Educational Technology.
SB 28 - revise certain provisions regarding the mileage allowance for transportation of children in need of special education or services.
SB 29 - repeal the requirement to report the names of students who are deaf, blind, or visually impaired.
SB 32 - revise certain provisions relating to the distribution of funds to sparse school districts, and to declare an emergency.
SB 33 - revise certain kindergarten enrollment requirements and repeal the nursery school age requirement.
SB 34 - revise the definition of an enrolled student.

SB 112 - authorize funding for certain tribal colleges to defray certain costs associated with educating nonbeneficiary students at tribal colleges and to make an appropriation therefor.

HB 1033 - impose sanctions on schools and certified school personnel for compromising the integrity of a state-required academic achievement test.
HB 1034 - revise certain provisions regarding the data submission requirements for the state accreditation of schools.

SB 210 - require the South Dakota State Library to continue to circulate popular books to citizens and to ensure that records are reviewed for historical significance before being discarded.
HB 1034 - revise certain provisions regarding the data submission requirements for the state accreditation of schools.
HB 1033 - impose sanctions on schools and certified school personnel for compromising the integrity of a state-required academic achievement test.
SB 195 - allow member schools of the South Dakota High School Activities Association to provide a portion of certain admissions fees to local organizations that support interscholastic activities.

HB 1233 - revise the publishing requirement for school board vacancies in newly created school districts, to revise the deadline by which candidates for new school boards must file nominating petitions, and to declare an emergency.
SB 116 - provide a legislative deadline for the adoption of the budget for the Department of Education.
SB 117 - increase general funding for school districts, to impose a temporary limit on the growth of state general fund spending, and to suspend the transfer of moneys from the general fund to the budget reserve fund, and to the property tax reduction fund.
SB 157 - revise the funding for K-12 education.
SB 203 - require an annual adjustment from funds deposited in the property tax reduction fund from the tax on cigarettes and other tobacco products to the general fund levies of a school district by reducing local effort by nine million dollars.

HB 1277 - allow temporary contractual agreements between certain school districts to exist for an additional year.
HCR 1006 - Encouraging the Board of Regents to approve the creation of a Mandarin Chinese major curriculum at Northern State University.

HB 1266 - allow a home school student to partially enroll in the student's resident school district or in another school district under certain circumstances and to clarify certain testing requirements for students who are partially enrolled.
HB 1141 - create the health and safety facility equity program to assist certain school districts with critical need for capital construction.
HB 1279 - create a task force to study permanent funding options for the state technical institutes, to provide for its composition, and to declare an emergency.
HB 1205 - provide funds to the state technical institutes.
33rd Legislative Day

HB 1082 - revise the funding of K-12 education in the state.
HB 1171 - enhance education in the state and to make an appropriation therefor.
HB 1290 - provide for an Office of Indian Education and an Indian Education Advisory Council and to establish certain provisions to enhance Indian education in the state.
HB 1307 - provide for the development of end of course exams.
HB 1113 - prohibit school districts from granting credit for distance learning courses offered through entities other than the South Dakota Virtual High School.
HB 1082 - revise the funding of K-12 education in the state.
HB 1171 - enhance education in the state and to make an appropriation therefor.
