Measure allowing employees to lock firearms in their vehicles dies in committee

Air Date:02/14/2011

By Jackelyn Severin

A measure allowing employees to keep firearms locked in their car while at work failed a legislative committee.

Currently businesses can prohibit employees from carrying firearms into work or leaving firearms in their vehicles if they're parked on the premises. Proponents of House Bill 1204 say this policy violates second amendment rights.

Opponents say the measure infringes on the private property rights of business owners. Shawn Lyons is with the South Dakota Retailers Association. He says allowing employees to lock firearms in their vehicles increases the potential for disgruntled employees and customers to bring a loaded weapon into the business place.

Lyons says, “The commonsense security precaution of prohibiting firearms in the workplace is essential to maintaining a safe and secure business environment. Further, it is essential that businesses be granted their private property rights and set policies that they deem appropriate for their customers and employees alike.”

The committee killed House bill 1204 by a vote of 12 to 1.
