Mental Revision
Air Date:01/25/2012
The State Senate passed a bill that revises treatment and consent for people with mental illness.
State Senator Jean Hunhoff of Yankton says Senate Bill 43 provides quicker access to services for individuals that have behavioral health needs and also reduces the stigma of mental illness. She says revisions to mental health statutes are long over due.
"The purpose was to create a strategic plan for the future of behavioral health services in this state and to make recommendations. Keep in mind the last revisions made to mental health statutes was over 21 years ago," Hunhoff says.
Hunhoff says the revised statute will not only give patients quicker access to treatment but also an appropriate level of resources.
