Pierre and Ft. Pierre Residents Unhappy with FEMA

Newsroom - 02/21/2012

Several Pierre and Ft. Pierre residents are unhappy with FEMA’s handling of the Missouri River Flood last year. Many expressed their feelings at a town hall meeting held by U.S. Representative Kristi Noem.

The complaints of Pierre and Ft. Pierre citizens range far and wide from dealing with unresponsive FEMA officials to the amount of paperwork involved in applying for flood relief assistance. Rodny Vizcarra, of Ft. Pierre, says the loan rate he received through FEMA was much higher than what he could have gotten through his bank.

“A disaster should have the best loan rates,” says Vizcarra, “Its not like your going out there building on a room to your house for a man cave where your  gonna put your pool table and you know, or adding a pool to your house or whatever. You know, this is because you got messed up with a disaster.”

Representative Kristi Noem says she’s disappointed with the shear number of issues raised about FEMA. She says a congressional oversight committee may need to step in and hold FEMA accountable.
