An event showcasing Native American art is opening in Rapid City this weekend. Nearly 50 artists are expected to set up shop in Main Street Square.
The Fifth Annual Native POP: People of the Plains event hosts Native artist from around the country. The John Paul Rangel works with the show. He says they select artists from a variety of backgrounds.
“So we look for artists who are established and emerging. We look for people who are doing work across different mediums. We’re not looking for stuff that looks historic necessarily, but if there’s somebody who’s doing and it’s high quality work, we definitely want it. But we have fine artists who are working glass, who are sculptors. We have painters. We have a digital artist. So it’s really a wide a wide range of Native cultural expression.”
The art is juried in several categories and many vendors sell their work during the event. Rangel says film screenings and a fashion show are also scheduled.
“And it’s not just about art. It’s a whole cultural experience with the culture bearers, with the performances, with the fashion show and with fine art.”
The art market is open to the public from 9a.m. until 6p.m. on July 15th.
