Sioux Falls is a city that doesn’t have a real reason to exist. No navigable river. No early industry. No major rail connections to kick it into an early industrial overdrive.
And yet, the city has blossomed into an example of urban living that wins accolades. It also attracts ire from other South Dakota communities who resent its dominance in state politics and the national imagination.
So let’s talk about Sioux Falls. A new book, City of Hustle: A Sioux Falls Anthology, makes the case for the innovation and entrepreneurship that turned a divorce outpost into a financial and medical powerhouse.
We’re gathering the editors (Jon Lauck and Patrick Hicks) along with a few of the nearly 50 authors who contributed to City of Hustle in the SDPB Sioux Falls Studios to record an episode of In the Moment with Lori Walsh in front of a studio audience.
From the history of the city’s public art to the rise of a quirky and improbable culinary ecosystem, we’ll talk about what makes Sioux Falls a magnet for monikers: “Ellis Island of the Prairie,” “Wall Street on the Prairie,” and “Best Little City in America.”
On Thursday, November 17, we kick things off with hors d’oeuvres and drinks at 6:30 p.m. CST and settle in to make radio at 7 p.m. Lori Walsh moderates the conversation. Register HERE.
