Helping farmers make a plan before they need it

This interview originally aired on In the Moment on SDPB Radio.

Planning a legacy is complicated work. But the cost of not having a plan in place can be devastating to a family and a farm.

Everyone should make a plan before they need it. With farm and ranch estate planning, the process of making that plan can be more complex than expected.

Why is it so complicated? How can one be fair when divvying up an asset-rich and cash-poor estate?

Heather Gessner is the livestock business management field specialist at the South Dakota State University Extension. She holds workshops that teach farmers and ranchers how to best secure their legacies and joins In the Moment with a crash course.
