Some South Dakota libraries are looking to increase their number of cardholders in honor of National Library Card Sign Up Month. Local librarians are using the opportunity to partner with local businesses and highlight library services.
In step with the national theme “One Card, Endless Possibilities,” the South Dakota State Library took to social media saying while a library card “may be small, [it] packs a mighty punch.”
Around the state there are 129 library outlets who served 89% of South Dakota residents. However, only 39% of South Dakota residents have a library card. That's according to the South Dakota State Library.
Jeri Light is the Adult Program Team Lead at Siouxland Libraries in Sioux Falls. She said while the first thing that comes to mind might be books, South Dakota’s libraries offer a lot more than that.
“In addition to access to books the library offers many other programs, events and services to cardholders. The library offers access to a wide range of databases that complement our physical and digital collections," Light said. "Whether you’re advancing your career with JobNow, building your job security or developing new professional skills with LinkedIn learning, these library resources are here to support you.”
In South Dakota, 98% of libraries provide public computers and internet access. Libraries also provide access to 58 different research databases for state residents.
Alysia Boysen is the Director for Siouxland Libraries. She said in the Sioux Falls and Minnehaha County areas, they’re using the month to promote a new initiative.
“This year’s theme highlights the wide range of resources and services that are available to anyone who has a library card. Currently there are just over 80,000 residents in Sioux Falls and Minnehaha County who have a Siouxland libraries card," Boysen said. "We are going to use National Library Card Sign-up month to kick-off a three-year campaign where our goal is to double the number of library card holders.”
Other libraries across the state are holding their own promotions and celebrations. For example, next week Gaylen’s Gourmet Popcorn in Madison is offering a free scoop of ice cream to customers with a Madison Public Library card.
Most local libraries offer library cards for free with proof of residence within their service area.
