Remembrance: Ward Whitwam

Email share

We were saddened to hear of the passing of Sioux Falls Architect Ward Whitwam. He was 97.

Mr. Whitwam's sixty-plus career spanned a wide range of projects, from office buildings to residences. His most iconic works, however, are not buildings and are not located in any towns, yet are instantly familiar to visitors from around the globe: The massive concrete tipis found at nine of South Dakota's interstate rest stops.

We had the wonderful opportunity to interview Mr. Whitwam in 2017 when he was presented with the Distinction in Creative Achievement Award at the Governor's Awards in the Arts.
