South Dakota on Film, the latest episode of SDPB's Images of the Past, offers a look at some of the first films either shot in South Dakota or produced with a South Dakota story as a central plot element. More recent Hollywood hits like National Treasure and Dances with Wolves are just two of the better-known films in a long list of feature films that dates back to 1911.

The oldest surviving films centered in South Dakota feature stories of pioneers, cowboys and Indians. How and when those stories were told reveal something about South Dakota's role in the lore of the Old West, but they say much more about the perspective and priorities of filmmakers working on location at the dawn of the motion picture age.
