(RAPID CITY, SD) – SDPB presents a free, 60-minute preview of never-before-seen footage from THE VIETNAM WAR, the new 10-part, 18-hour documentary film series directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick.
Two screenings will be shown to accomodate interest. The screenings take place Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 6:00pm and 7:30 pm at the SDPB Black Hills Bureau, 415 Main Street, downtown Rapid City.
In addition to the screening, Larry Zimmerman will provide opening remarks. Zimmerman was appointed Secretary of the SD Department of Veterans Affairs in September 2011. Prior to being selected as the Secretary, Zimmerman served as the State Command Sergeant Major. He also served as Postmaster in Spearfish, Pierre and Sturgis, and his career in the U.S. Postal Service spanned 35 years until his retirement from the Post Office in 2009.
Zimmerman served 29 years in the South Dakota National Guard, retiring in 2013. Zimmerman completed a tour in Afghanistan (OEF) as the Operations SGM for the nine Northern provinces in that country, and before that was the CSM in both the 109th RSG in Rapid City and the 109th En Bn in Sturgis, and the Regional Training Institute at Ft. Meade, along with numerous other positions within the Army Guard. Zimmerman was Active Duty Army from 1973-1976 in the 4th Infantry Division at Ft Carson, CO. Zimmerman is a lifetime member of: the American Legion (Piedmont), Veterans of Foreign Wars (Custer), Disabled American Veterans (Sturgis) and Vietnam Veterans of America (Watertown).
The screening is free and open to the public. A reception for veterans and their families follows the screening. During the reception, SDPB producers will be on-hand to record interviews with Vietnam War & Vietnam Era Veterans, and others who have stories to share.
THE VIETNAM WAR is a ten-part, 18-hour documentary film series directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick that will air on SDPB beginning Sunday, September 17, 2017. In an immersive 360-degree narrative, Burns and Novick tell the epic story of the Vietnam War as it has never before been told on film. The Vietnam War features testimony from nearly 100 witnesses, including many Americans who fought in the war and others who opposed it, as well as Vietnamese combatants and civilians from both sides.
