Something happened on Thursday that was a bit out of the ordinary. Upsets happen at tournament events all the time, but it’s the sort of upsets that happened, which made Thursday’s first round games stand out.

There are currently four state high school basketball tournaments going on in South Dakota: Class B boys in Aberdeen, Class A boys in Sioux Falls, and both the Class AA boys and girls in Rapid City.

At each tournament, the No. 7 seeded team took down the No. 2 seeded team.

Class B

No. 7 Parker 48 No. 2 Langford Area 39 Final

Class A

No. 7 Tri-Valley 59 No. 2 Chamberlain 47 Final

Class AA Girls

No. 7 Sioux Falls O’Gorman 37 No. 2 Sioux Falls Roosevelt 33 Final

Class AA Boys

No. 7 Aberdeen Central 56 No. 2 Brookings 52 Final

Digging even deeper, last week during the Class B and Class A girls tournaments, there was a No. 7 upset as well. Vermillion took down Hamlin in the opening round of the Class A tournament 49-43.

The only No. 2 seeded team to win their opening game during the state basketball championships this year was Sully Buttes - they finished the season winning a state title.

Again, upsets aren’t rare, but to have five of the six high school basketball tournaments experience a seven seed upsetting a two seed in opening round action, it’s worth noting.
