Transportation Commission funds South Dakota road projects

The South Dakota Transportation Commission authorized $33 million in funds to counties and cities for 2023.

$27.4 million will be dispersed to all 66 counties and cities with a population over $5,000. The remaining funds will be used to reimburse federal aid projects as determined by local government, according to South Dakota Department of Transportation Secretary Joel Jundt.

"A safe and efficient transportation system is fundamental to our state's economy and success," Jundt said. "These state funds help our local partners to maintain and enhance their local transportation systems, especially with the harshness of this past winter."

Counties and cities can use these highway funds to help maintain, preserve, repair and reconstruct roads and bridges.

The Transportation Commission authorized over $144.4 million in transportation funding to local governments in 2022 in the form of grants, state funding, and federal aid.
