The South Dakota Board of Regents is looking to make state universities more attractive to out-of-state students.
The board is proposing expanding the South Dakota Advantage rate to Illinois and Wisconsin.
That’s a program allowing freshmen and transfer students from other states to receive resident tuition rates. It currently applies to Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, and Colorado.
"We are always looking for opportunities to grow our enrollment and bring more people into South Dakota," said SDBOR Executive Director Brian Maher in a press release sent Friday. "By increasing our regional reach and offering a competitive tuition rate, we're optimistic that our state will appeal to those students."
The board is also considering expanding “child of alumni” rates to students pursuing graduate degrees. This proposal would offer resident graduate rates to students who are children of alumni of any SDBOR institution. It’s currently only for undergrads.
These proposals are the result of a study looking at ways to increase enrollment at South Dakota’s public universities.
