What was once waterfront property in Waubay is now underwater most of the year.

This interview originally aired on "In the Moment" on SDPB Radio.

In the last 10 years, more of Waubay, South Dakota, has ended up underwater as Bitter Lake expands into the community. A class at South Dakota State University looked at the vacant, flooded lots and saw an opportunity.

The class created a guide for Waubay on how to build flood-resilient landscapes that benefit the land and the people living near it.

Jeremiah Bergstrom is a lecturer of landscape architecture in South Dakota State University's School of Design.

He's joined by former students Shelbie Smith and Emma Martin to talk about their contributions to the project and how they approached crafting the guide.

Lori Walsh is the host and senior producer of In the Moment.
Ellen Koester is a producer of In the Moment, SDPB's daily news and culture broadcast.
