A Black Hills National Forest committee is accepting proposals to improve forest ecosystems in western South Dakota.
The Black Hills Resource Advisory Committee has about $90,000 dollars for projects that maintain or improve land health and water quality.
Kelly Warnke is the coordinator for the committee.
"Projects like that could include treatment of noxious weeds, soil erosion mitigation. We have done erosion control along Sheridan Lake.”
Projects are limited to the Black Hills National Forest or lands within Custer, Lawrence or Pennington counties. Warnke says pre-planning can make proposals more realistic.
“We really encourage project proponents to talk with their local forest service office. If you have a recreation project you have in mind, talking with a recreation person on a district would give you an idea if we have the environmental clearance to go ahead with that project. Environmental clearance can take a lot of time.”
April 2 is the deadline to submit proposals.
