SDPB at Flandreau Fridays

SDPB was honored to be in Flandreau June 25 to celebrate the first Flandreau Fridays: Celebrating Our Diversity event.

The inaugural Flandreau Fridays event drew a crowd of all ages.

Prior to the event, SDPB met with community members and ate our way through town, including beef hominy wild rice soup with frybread, wojapi and Hawaiian ices at Flandreau Bistro & Roasterie; donuts & Mocha Vanilla Cake at Flandreau Bakery, and egg salad sandwiches at Hunkake Café.

Then we took in the fantastic inaugural Flandreau Fridays event. Organized by Brittany Ho and her intrepid committee, this community-wide effort reflected the intentional inclusivity with which Ho and her committee worked to reflect Flandreau’s multiple cultures and generations.

The lively kids’ area brimmed with kiddos and activities like painting, mural-making, and hoops with the Flandreau high school team. We visited the arts vendors and sampled more food: burritos from El Rinconsito; chicken kebabs and egg rolls from Annie’s, and bratwurst and sauerkraut from Pleasant Valley Colony.

We danced and sang along with the fantastic line-up of musicians and performers. From local performers like the bagpipers of Dakota District Pipes & Drums, the Flandreau City Band, and musician and hoop dancer Jackie Bird (Flandreau Indian School grad), to Advent Capela’s rendition of the Filipino national anthem, to Mexican Azteca Dancers from Minneapolis and the roots rock of the Barn Flies.

Flandreau put on a Friday to remember. SDPB was honored to be there and can’t wait to return. Thank you, Flandreau!

SDPB in Your Community
As SDPB gears up for the 24th season of Dakota Life, we’re on-location to listen to community members, visit key locations, and learn more about the issues, culture and history of South Dakota’s towns from the people who call it home.
