COVID Cases & Hospitalizations Rise As Vaccination Rate Stagnates

COVID Update

The state Department of Health reports 376 new cases of COVID-19 and one new death.

The latest fatality brings the state’s death toll to 2,056. The death was a man in his 20s from Brule county.

Active cases are at their highest level since April. There are 1,939 active COVID cases in the state and 105 people hospitalized. Of those patients, 19 are on ventilators.

38 out of South Dakota’s 66 counties report at least one new case. Pennington County has the most new cases with 85. Minnehaha County follows with 66.

Just over 55 percent of state residents 12 and older now have the full vaccine series. Nearly 61 percent of South Dakotans 12 and older has received at least one dose of the vaccine.

South Dakota Department of Health:

"The more the virus that causes COVID-19 circulates in a community, the more opportunities it has to transform into variants that can spread more easily. Help stop the spread and further mutation of the Coronavirus by getting vaccinated."
