Black Hills Plein Air Paint Out

Artists are coming to the Northern Hills in full force this weekend for the 8th annual Black Hills Plein Air Paint Out.  Plein Air is French for painting outside.  The Paint Out is done in a different location around the hills every year.

Karen Everett is the Executive Director of the Lead/Deadwood Arts Center.  She says artists can paint the scene of their choice.

“This year we thought we would go out to the historic mining camp of Timon at the Fillmore Mine, and the community of Rochford,  and then we’ll end the last day in the towns of Lead and Deadwood,” says Everett.

Everett says more than thirty artists participate in the Paint Out every year.  She also says well-known local artists like John Crane have participated in years past.  This year’s paintings are to be auctioned off at a wet sale Saturday evening in Deadwood.
