South Dakota’s House Education Committee resurrected a bill to give incentive funds to districts with low numbers of remedial students. The committee had earlier deferred House Bill 11-66 to the 41 st day. Representative Scott Eckland of Sioux Falls supports the amended legislation.
Eckland told members, "The big concern when we sent this bill to the 41 st day that I had was that it seemed to be very unequal to how the funds would be distributed, depending on how many teachers were in a school district that received these funds.
"And this addendum fixes that, so that it would be the same amount no matter which district would be getting the award. So I think this amendment fixes this bill, significantly, and makes it worthy of another look at, and moving it to the floor."
Members approved the amended measure on a voice vote and sent it to the full House.
