The House of Representatives gave spending authority Thursday for a new veterans’ home at Hot Springs.
Representative Fred Romkema says the request for funding comes from the state Department of Veterans Affairs.
Romkema says South Dakota received the largest federal V-A construction grant ever awarded to one facility. Last year the legislature awarded a total of $34.6 million in spending authority.
This year, Senate Bill 27 asks for almost $7 million more, with just under $2 million coming from the state’s general fund.
Romkema says the additional money is needed to make some federally-required modifications. He says there are two wings added to the original concept, some kitchens for a homier atmosphere, and some energy-efficient features.
Representative Lance Carson says services will continue during construction.
“This is going to be a new purchase of land, and it’s going to be a totally new facility set away so the people who are already there, they’re committed to be in the veterans home out there, will still have a place.”
The Veterans Home has been in Hot Springs since 1889.
