South Dakota Supreme Court at USD

Tom Sorensen, Associate Dean of the USD School of Law. Beginning Monday, March 18, the South Dakota Supreme Court is in session for three days at the University of South Dakota School of Law. The justices will hear several oral arguments during the March 2013 Term of Court at the law school courtroom, including three oral arguments on Monday, March 18: State of South Dakota vs. Briley W. Piper, 9 a.m., Russell Englund and Mary Englund vs. Paul Vital, 10 a.m., and State of South Dakota vs. James Duane Riley, 11 a.m. Oral arguments scheduled for Tuesday, March 19 include: In the Matter of the Termination of Parental Right, 9 a.m.; and State of South Dakota vs. Gabriel Darryn Medicine, 10 a.m. Oral arguments for Wednesday, March 20 are Ronald Voeller vs. HSBC Card Services, Inc., at 9 a.m.; State of South Dakota vs. Brian Dennis Amick at 10 a.m.; In the Matter of the Estate of Eugene Shipman, deceased, 11 a.m. Chief Justice David Gilbertson (USD School of Law, ’75) and Justices John Konenkamp (’74), Steven Zinter (’75), Glen Severson (’75) and Lori Wilbur (’77) will hear the three cases each morning with afternoon sessions reserved for written appellate briefs.  “The Supreme Court’s March Term of Court is always a unique opportunity for our law school students and the campus community to see the state’s judicial process at its highest level,” stated Thomas Geu, dean of the School of Law. “It’s also a ‘welcome home’ for all five members of the South Dakota Supreme Court who are graduates of the USD School of Law.”
