The sponsor of legislation that protects businesses or individuals who deny the sale of wedding services or goods due to freedom of religion has pulled the legislation. Republican Ernie Otten says he has received emails about Senate Bill 67.
"We’ve been back checking through lawyers and what not to make sure we were on solid grounds and they kept on coming back with that we didn’t need the legislation, that everybody is already protected. So there was no sense in proceeding if it was already protected," Senator Otten says.
Otten says there is misinformation about his intention as well. Opponents started a social media campaign. They say the bill discriminates. Thursday lawmakers will consider Senate Bill 66 which gives clergymen or other official’s immunity when it comes to their decision on marriage services.
