Sioux Falls City Election Results

Sioux Falls voters re-elect current Mayor Mike Huether and want a new Wal-Mart and Snow Gates on winter plows. Tuesday’s election that brought a thirty-one percent city turnout.

Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether defeated City Councilman Greg Jamison with nearly fifty-six percent of the votes. Huether will serve his second four-year-term in office.  He views the new events center and his clean up efforts during last year’s ice storm, as high points during his tenure as Sioux Falls Mayor. Councilmen Jamison plans to finish his term on the Sioux Falls City Council and says he will work with Mayor Huether.

Voters also had several ballot measures to consider.  Initiated Measure one mandates the city use snow gates plows used in residential areas.  Supporters say it’ll cut down on snow piled in front of driveways.  Opponents contend it is expensive and snow gates prevent plows from pushing snow to the curb.  Seventy-five percent of voters want snow gates.

Sixty-five percent of voters support the rezoning and construction of a new Walmart on the south side of the city.  Supporters say this helps spread out traffic and will encourage more growth.  Opponents fear building a Walmart so close to residential areas will decrease property values and don’t want added traffic.

Voters also support the idea of an indoor city pool and passed all changes to its charter.
