Officials with the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls say a tornado touched down southeast of Harrisburg, north of Canton this afternoon. Mike Gillispie is the Hydrologist with the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls. He says while funnel clouds developed as the storm approached Sioux Falls, there were no confirmed touchdowns inside the city.
“We did not hear of any damage,” Gillispie says. “The confirmed touchdown we had was in the middle of open areas, so we do not have any reports of any damage with the tornado. It looks like the main problem that we’re going to have around the area is any kind of hail damage that people can get out and survey after everything’s done.”
Gillispie says hailstones of one to two inches in diameter were reported in Sioux Falls, as well as heavy rainfall. He says the severe weather has left the state and moved into southwest Minnesota and northwest Iowa.
