Utility Scam Targets South Dakotans

South Dakota’s Attorney General is warning residents to be aware of a utility company scam.

Attorney General Marty Jackley says scammers call residents and claim to be with local utility companies. The caller argues that accounts are past due and threatens to turn off the electricity. Jackley says it’s an attempt to steal identification numbers and account information.

“We’re really seeing it across the state,” Jackley says. “And so we’re warning all South Dakotans that if you do receive a phone call from somebody claiming to be a utility company dealing with a past due debt or account to hang up, call your utility company or call the Attorney General’s office to ensure that it’s a proper discussion about an account.”

Jackley says utility companies don’t make threatening phone calls like the ones conducted by scammers.
