Attorney General Marty Jackley is warning South Dakotans to check for unauthorized charges on their credit cards after a data breach at Home Depot stores. Jackley says the incident affects stores nationwide, and likely impacts South Dakota consumers as well.
Attorney General Marty Jackley says authorities are still investigating the breach. He says it appears criminals have accessed data including full names and credit card numbers. He says the incident may have occurred as early as this past spring. Jackley says he and other attorneys general are working to learn more details.
“There’s a working group that is working directly with the Home Depot so that we can push out some additional information to our home state consumers,” Jackley says. “So that I can tell South Dakotans a better time frame that this is involved, to be more specific on the in store verses the shopping online, so maybe we can better help consumers make some informed decisions. So we’re going to continue to do that as an Attorney General community. Home Depot has been very cooperative with authorities.”
Jackley says it’s a good idea to monitor credit card and bank statements, as well as get into the habit of checking credit reports.
