Crash on Interstate 90 Kills One Person

One man is dead after his van hit a charter bus on Interstate 90 in Pennington County.

The crash happened at about 9 Mountain Time last night near Mile Marker 80.

Tony Mangan is a public information officer with the South Dakota Department of Public Safety. He says the bus was stalled on the roadway.

"You know, the investigation is continuing from the Highway Patrol but what it looks like is a charter bus was eastbound on Interstate 90, east of Rapid City when for some reason, the bus lost all power. The bus came to a stop in the middle of both lanes, there were no lights visible on the bus. It was basically pitch black, is what we understand. And, just a few seconds after that happened, this van that was also eastbound rear-ended the bus," Mangan says.

Mangan says the bus had 56 passengers on board. He says buses from Ellsworth Air Force Base picked up the bus passengers and drove them to Rapid City.
