Today (Thursday, March 8th) brings Day One of the South Dakota High School State Girls Basketball Tournament. Class “A” teams are meeting in Watertown, with the Class “B” field gathering in Aberdeen.
The Faith Longhorns are preparing for a first-round game against Tripp-Delmont/Armour to the beat of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. The Longhorns are perfect in 23 games this season, and have the number-one seed in the field of eight schools. Faith Superintendent Kelly Daughters says the girls have given his district something to rally around.
Daughters says, “And I know one of the mottos for our girls this year is ‘go out and earn it.’ And they did every bit of that this season, going in, game in and game out—not taking any team for granted, and working hard all season, and coming into the state tournament with an undefeated record and I truly feel our girls have earned the number one seed, and number one spot coming into this state tournament.”
Daughters says the close-knit town in Meade County has provided a new school building and community center in recent years. The town’s community gymnasium is the site of several post-season conference and regional tournament games each year.
The Class “A” Girls Tournament games are available through the weekend on S-D-P-B T-V 1, while the Class “B” games air on S-D-P-B T-V 3. Statistical information and photos are available at http://sdpb.org/basketball
