Jackson County Officials: Be Aware Of Flooding On Roads

South Dakota Highway Patrol

The South Dakota Department of Transportation has closed Highway 63 due to the crest of the White River south of Belvidere in Jackson County.

Jackson County Sheriff Matt Haugen says numerous county and township roads are submerged due to the river and its tributaries swelling up.

"Complicating drainage has been a lot of ice debris that's keeping channels from flowing properly. And, so, when the ice backs up and then the water breaks up, we get a lot of overland overflow after the ice breaks through. And so, that's been generally kind of making its way east. The county highway superintendent has run out of cones to mark all the places that are underwater. And, he has asked me to pass on his heartfelt request that everyone keep an eye out - especially in low-lying areas because there are a lot of places where roads are underwater - could be washed out - and [to] expect culverts to get washed out."

A flood warning continues for the White River near Kadoka until further notice. Motorists may visit safetravelusa.com to view road conditions on interstates, U.S. highways, and state highways in South Dakota or dial 5-1-1 for further information.
