When their efforts to establish a homeless camp along Rapid Creek last week didn’t come to fruition, the Lakota led group, Camp Mni Luzahan, were able to find land to continue their goal of helping the houseless people of Rapid City.
Over this weekend they secured land outside of Rapid City to continue their service to keep unsheltered people safe and warm by offering food, lodging, cold weather gear and protection from harassment and violence.
The land is mutually owned by 3 South Dakota Tribes: the Oglala Sioux Tribe, the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and the Rosebud Sioux Tribe.
Volunteers are and organizers are hoping to establish a permanent spot for tine homes in Rapid City for vulnerable unhoused people to sleep. They are calling on volunteers to help cook, provide security and first aid or medical support.
