On today's show

After three weeks, the legislative process is hitting its stride in Pierre. However, some of Governor Kristi Noem’s legislative pushes are hitting roadblocks at the capitol. The Republican-controlled legislature has rejected several of the governor’s proposals and is looking to amend others. SDPB’s Lee Strubinger reports.

Advocates for strong second amendment rights are offering legislation that could restrict how some local officials respond when federal authorities call for assistance. This is a summary of arguments during the debate on House Bill 1052.

SDPB reporters bring the latest updates on a variety of bills pending in Pierre. Today we talk Custer State Park campground expansion, a Democratic hopeful for governor, and efforts to increase money flowing to low-income students to attend private schools. Lee Strubinger, Arielle Zionts, and Jackelyn Severin join us.

Take a Moment to consider NPR's Tiny Desk: Today, NPR launches its 2022 Tiny Desk Contest. Since 2008, The Tiny Desk series has invited artists to the NPR offices in Washington D.C. to perform live at the desk of Bob Boilen. Bob Boilen was a musician, record store employee, and multi-media artist when he was interviewed for his work for the national program All Things Considered. After that experience Boilen went on to doggedly seek employment at NPR. He would go on to direct All Things Considered for eighteen years. Today you probably know him as the creator of the program All Songs Considered. It's safe to say that Boilen's passion and uncanny ability to find the right song for the right moment changed public radio and changed the lives of artists around the world. During the pandemic, NPR enlisted artists to record their own performances at home. Tiny Desk Home Concerts were born. Let's Take A Moment to hear an excerpt from our interview with Bob Boilen in October 2021.

Early on in the COVID-19 pandemic, many South Dakotans put air travel on hold. And now, nearly two years later, COVID-19 continues to keep us grounded. Only this time it’s not that South Dakotans aren’t traveling. COVID-19-induced staffing shortages are creating flight delays and cancellations. SDPB’s Lura Roti visits with South Dakota travelers to learn how they are coping.

A group of "disruptive grant-makers" called the Waterers is setting out to prove that rethinking philanthropy can transform communities. Joining us today for an initial look at the Waterers and how to replace competitive grantmaking, we welcome Peter Strong. Peter is a frequent guest on In the Moment, director of Racing Magpie in Rapid City, and a representative of the Waterers.
