Being Ukrainian in South Dakota, and improving our habitat

South Dakota's Second Century Habitat Fund has new leadership. It's an organization that urges landowners to embrace the importance of grasslands and pheasant habitats in the state. Executive Director Brian Bashore joins us with an update.

It’s been three weeks since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. And for families there each day is a struggle for survival. The stories of innocent Ukrainian civilians struggling to feed their children and evacuate make many South Dakotans wonder how they can help. Two Sioux Falls churches are working together to get funds for food, fuel, medicine and other necessities to Ukrainian families. SDPB’s Lura Roti has this story.

Thousands of Ukrainian Americans live in South Dakota. And, like the rest of the world, those people are watching closely as Ukrainian military forces fight back against the Russian military invasion. Millions of civilians have fled the war zone and are seeking asylum in neighboring countries such as Poland, a NATO ally. Alla Kureninova has family in Ukraine. She joins us to tell us about the war from the viewpoint of those who are living it.

Dakota Life visited Eagle Butte and featured “The Four Bands Community Fund” an organization that assists area residents with a range of services from personal financial advice to starting a new business. Lakota Vogel is the Executive Director and, in her words, describes what it means to provide a financial lift to members of the community.
