On today's update...

Governor Kristi Noem is deploying South Dakota National Guard troops to the southern border. Sixty soldiers will deploy to Texas for three months later this spring.

State senators are passing a bill that moves the nomination of two constitutional officers from party conventions to the primary ballot. It's an idea that's surfaced in the Capitol several times the last two sessions.

A bill aiming to prohibit an employer from withholding compensation from an employee who quits without notice dies in a senate committee. Senate Bill 220 would prevent employers from punishing employees who do not give a two-week notice.

A bill to require schools to hit statewide teacher pay targets has advanced from the state House of Representatives. This comes years after the Blue-Ribbon Taskforce aimed to elevate the states near-bottom teacher pay.

South Dakota is the only state in the lower 48 without any passenger rail service — but that could soon change. A new Amtrak study includes a proposed route that would link Sioux Falls, Pierre, and Rapid City to existing rail networks in Denver and the Twin Cities.

And more.
