State lawmakers are moving forward on placing additional dollars toward two new prison construction projects. During the last two sessions, state lawmakers have placed more than $365 million into a fund to pay for the facilities.

The state's county courts all work with a local board of mental illness, but not every county has the proper resources to assist defendants. One bill aims to give counties more appeal options for individuals deemed at-risk.

The House State Affairs Committee is advancing a bill expanding Native American voting rights. Senate Bill 119 would allow Native American voters to register to vote using their tribal IDs.

A bill encouraging the Bureau of Indian Affairs to establish law enforcement training in South Dakota advances through the Senate Affairs Committee. Currently, BIA officers travel to New Mexico for training.

Sanford Underground Research Facility names Lakota artist Marty Two Bulls, Jr., as its 2024 Artist in Residence. Two Bulls, Jr., is a Rapid City-based artist and educator.
