House lawmakers are rejecting a bill that overrides the South Dakota high school activities association policy on transgender athlete participation.
The bill narrowly failed.
Democratic State Representative Erin Healy voted against the bill. She says she’s relieved see the last of the bills targeting LGBTQ issues get voted down.
“I would have liked to see people focus more on humanity and the fact that transgender kids don’t identify as the sex they were born as.”
The bill mirrors Texas high school sports policy that states a birth certificate is the sole determinant of gender identity for participating in sports.
A similar bill failed in the South Dakota senate.
