The ACLU of South Dakota's legislative priorities

ACLU

This interview originally aired on "In the Moment" on SDPB Radio.

Samantha Chapman is the advocacy manger of the South Dakota chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). The nonpartisan organization seeks to defend constitutional rights and liberties.

She joins In the Moment to discuss several bills impacting personal rights, including:

  • House Bill 1080, which would ban gender-affirming care for minors. This bill passed and was signed into law.
  • House Concurrent Resolution 6005, which would recognize the right to contraception for all adults. This resolution was deferred to the 41st legislative day and effectively killed.
  • House Bill 1116, which would prohibit state resources from hosting lewd or lascivious content. It was amended to strike all references to drag shows and passed the House State Affairs Committee.
Lori Walsh is a special correspondent with SDPB and host of the "In the Moment" podcast.
Ellen Koester served as a producer of "In the Moment," SDPB's daily news and culture broadcast.
