The House State Affairs Committee has killed a bill to require legislators to take a class on the constitution.
House Bill 1111 would have made first-term legislators take a class on the state and federal constitutions prior to the start of legislative session. The class content and instructor would be selected by the Director of the Legislative Research Council.
Many on the committee supported the idea of offering a class, however, didn’t see the need to put the requirement into law.
The committee suggested that the class could be delivered in a similar manner to other trainings legislators receive prior to session.
The panel killed the bill Monday in an 11 to two vote.
