Sen. Mike Rounds said candidate Kamala Harris announcing Gov. Tim Walz as her VP candidate could impact the Farm Bill.
Before the announcement, Rounds said the presidential election is delaying the process in the Senate.
Now, he said Harris’s VP pick makes the statement even more true.
“We’ve probably got the most liberal 1-2 combination for President-Vice President that we’ve seen on a ticket perhaps in history," Rounds said. "So, it’ll be interesting to see how the American people view that, because I think it’s really a question of policy more than anything else. Which policies do you want? Do you want more energy, or do you want less energy?”
The debate is over how to spread $20 billion in the bill across nutrition, conservation and farming practices.
Rounds said whoever is elected president is going to impact what ends up in the bill.
The Farm Bill is already delayed a year. It is reworked every five years, and that process was scheduled to last take place in 2023. Congress couldn't come to a deal, so the 2018 Farm Bill was extended another year. That reauthorization expires Sept. 30.
