New SDPB documentary explores the art & history of cattle branding

A family’s brand is more than a mark of ownership. A family brand has a story – a legacy. It’s often passed down from one generation to the next because for many ranch families, the story behind their cattle brand is entwined with the family’s history.

A family’s brand is more than a mark of ownership. A family brand has a story – a legacy. It’s often passed down from one generation to the next because for many ranch families, the story behind their cattle brand is entwined with the family’s history.

This interview originally aired on "In the Moment" on SDPB Radio.

The brand that a South Dakota ranch family uses to mark their cattle often has a story and legacy of its own.

For a new SDPB documentary, Lura Roti and Tim Davison headed into the state's pastures, farms and welding shops to learn what makes each cattle brand a unique work of art.

They join "In the Moment" for a behind-the-scenes look at the film.
