Sioux Falls mayor proposes purchasing land in Riverline District

Sioux Falls mayor Paul TenHaken is proposing that the city buy land in the Riverline District.

Many believe this could lead to a new convention center in Sioux Falls, and some have voiced concerns over costs.

Rich Merkouris is the vice chair of the city council. He said the land is important in the city’s plans.

“Whether we believe in a convention center or not, this is going to be a major entrance point into downtown, especially when those viaducts are redone. So, we need to take into consideration, ‘do we need to have that land available for development no matter what’,” Merkouris said.

He also said to pay attention on the issue.

“I believe there will be a public vote on this project. The land the council will consider purchasing, but at some later date there will be a public vote on moving forward with the convention center downtown. And so I’d encourage the public to stay engaged on this. There’s gonna be an opportunity to express yourself, at least from my perspective. That will take place over the next year or two, or whenever deemed appropriate,” Merkouris said.

Merkouris says it is important to note right now the city is deciding on purchasing the land, and not taking any action on a potential convention center.
